Safe System

What is the Safe System?

Safety starts with your employees

Hogan Engineering industry, transportation, armed forces, and police. In some fields and branches like these, we should not test aesthetics or creativity, because it is the safety that is the most important criterion. Therefore, it is better to test employees’ awareness, precision and careful approach, meanwhile notice, that safety lies in worker’s personality rather than their observed behavior. So instead of measuring the tolerance to monotony or attention-skills, we believe that it is more established and future-oriented to test a deeply determined personality characteristics because in this way your results will be more accurate and reliable.

What are the elements of the safe system?

Safety training can help employees become safer, but without insight into how individuals contribute to the safety climate, even the most extensive safety program is going to have limited success. Traditional safety solutions focus on processes but not people. Creating a safety climate is different – it focuses on people, not systems.

The Hogan Safe System model provides the tools necessary to build and maintain a culture of safe working practices. Three main components of the Safe System are:

The Safe System Climate Survey provides a feedback regarding perceptions of safety at all levels of the organization and results in a company-wide safety score.

The Hogan Safety Assessment evaluates employees and job applicants in terms of six safety-related competencies and provides valuable information for helping them develop safer work behavior. The Hogan Safety report was developed and carried out due to client’s needs and based on our extensive research experience. It is simple and easy to understand, and it tests only relevant and appropriate fields of personality related to safety behavior. These characteristics are stable and throw a light upon deep determinants of a person attitude towards safety, therefore the results are more reliable than any other measurement findings. The test of safety is not a simple test of personality, because certain traits that are beneficial in other fields can act as risk factors in safety behavior. The below mentioned dimensions are considered necessary when it comes to measurement:

  • Defiant – Compliant
  • Panicky – Strong
  • Irritable – Cheerful
  • Distractible – Vigilant
  • Reckless – Cautious
  • Arrogant – Trainable

The Safe System Coaching Process provides leadership with the data-based feedback needed to build and maintain a culture of safe working practices.

How is it going to help to your company and employees?

It helps with a selection or assessment: The results of the Safety report can contribute to “green of red light” decisions in staff selection, while it is also useful in the assessment of the already working employees. In this case the findings can be used as a tool to select participants for a safety training, since in this way we can more precisely determine who and what kind of safety component should be improved. Due to this report education and training will be more cost-efficient.

It decreases number of accident or theft: Regardless what kind of damage threatens the company, the Hogan Safety report always finds out truth about weaknesses or perhaps the strengths of your workers. When we explore employees’ attitude towards safety and try to cultivate it, we can limit either the direct (for example social insurance, compensation) or indirect (bad PR, fluctuation) costs.
